Context / Contexte
In 2018, an estimated 3 million new cases were diagnosed and about 1.4 million people died from cancer in Europe. Among all cancer types, 90% of cancer-related deaths, are attributed to the metastatic dissemination of the disease. Prof. Yang’s group, where Dr. Fattet did his postdoctoral research, demonstrated that a dynamic Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) process was necessary to allow tumor cell dissemination to secondary sites and metastatic outgrowth. First identified as an embryonic program, EMT has been shown by many to be reactivated during tumor progression. EMT not only contributes to metastasis, but also to the regulation of tumor cell plasticity by generating stem-like cells with tumor-initiating properties and resistance to conventional therapies.
Objectives / Objectifs
Dr. Laurent Fattet will carry out a fellowship to characterize the role of netrin-1 and one of its dependence receptors in the regulation of the Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) during tumor progression. This fellowship will be carried out in the Centre de Recherche en Cancérologie de Lyon (CRCL, Lyon, France) under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Mehlen.
Expected impact and results / Impact et résultats attendus
NetriCan will broaden the current knowledge on cancer metastasis and potentially lead to a new therapeutic strategy for patients with advanced or metastatic solid tumors for which treatment options are limited. Thus, NetriCan will significantly contribute to the European excellence and improve patients’ care.
