Context / Contexte

The role of sustainable chemistry as catalyst for innovation and growth in Europe is well demonstrated – as shown by the European Technology Platform on Sustainable Chemistry - ETP SusChem (www.suschem.org), a joint initiative facilitated by the European Commission and led by CEFIC, the European Chemical Industry Council, and by EuropaBio, the European Association of Bioindustries initiative. The EU is world leader in chemi-cals production which is supplying products to virtually all downstream industrial sectors. Chemical industry is a major contributor to the EU economy in terms of revenues, trade balance and employment. Many aspects concur in developing new sustainable chemical processes. Catalysis, novel green solvents, re-newable energy and raw materials, and process intensification (for example, using microreactors) are the core elements and tools to enable new sustainable chemical processes.
The multidisciplinary competences required to address sustainable chemistry, particularly from an industrial perspective, and the necessity of closer pan-European cooperation, imply the need to foster the creation of an European Doctorate School on Sustainable Industrial Chemistry. At the same time the green-chemistry and sustainability issue are only recently picking up momentum (see recent vision papers being published) and therefore explains why this is the right moment to create such doctorate programme.

Objectives / objectifs

The overall objective of the doctorate in Sustainable Industrial Chemistry is to create an interdisci-plinary integrated programme in order to face the new challenges required to address sustainable industrial chemistry in Europe and worldwide, bridging fundamental knowledge to applied development by joining different top-level competences across Europe both from academic that industrial sides. The programme will attract students from all over the world, training them in different research fields which are of direct concern for EU FP7 programme and EU 2020 Agenda. Moreover, this programme aims to provide solutions to the problems of knowledge fragmentation present in Europe, both at the university and in industrial companies, in the area of sustainable industrial chemistry, by setting up an interdisciplinary doctorate programme, in-volving chemical and energy companies, inspired by the concept of transferring sustainable/green chemistry from idea to innovation.
Develop novel sustainable chemical processes requires an inter/multi-disciplinary and inter-sectorial research. For this reason, the PhD programme combines the laboratory-based core of research activities with i) a mobility programme, with at least two mandatory mobility periods, the first in a different Universities of the consortium and the second in one of the associated company members; ii) an educational/training pro-gramme to provide general knowledge on science and technology tools on sustainable industrial chemistry and technical skills in specific thematic fields; iii) a professional skills programme, in collaboration with companies, dedicated to improve the capacity of the students in transferring idea to innovation.

Impact/ results – Impact/résultats

Educational impact : SINCHEM Doctorate addresses critical areas of development identified from the chemical industry itself (ETP SusChem) as required for the innovation in the field, and put at the core of the educational objective to bridge the gap between fundamental and applied research, and in transferring idea to innovation. PhD stu-dents will be thus educate not only in their specific research lines (with a multi/inter-disciplinary and inter-organisational approach), but also in transferrable and professional skills which facilitate their career. They will: • be strongly internationally oriented: they will be familiar with culture, legal system and languages of at least two European countries; • have developed inter-relational skills; they will have interacted and worked together with people and faculties from many different countries; • have developed a strong sense of autonomy: they will have organized their lives in at least two different countries, they will have learned to work to tight deadlines; and they will have produced original and in-novative ideas. • have developed an open-minded attitude: they will be skilled in trans-disciplinary analysis and they will have a problem-solving approach.

Scientific impact : SINCHEM doctoral subjects will be original. The subjects address new challenges both in scientific as well as in socio-economic terms. Given the outstanding level as attendance to international conferences and publication of the scientific results within the SINCHEM doctoral programme, excellence of scientific outcomes is assured.
