Context / Contexte

Traditionally chemical and biological analysis has been performed by skilled personnel using large specialised equipment in central laboratories. It was nearly 20 years ago that it was first reported the development of a silicon chip based gas chromatograph. This work was important because it was the first instance that techniques used in the microelectronics industry were borrowed for the fabrication of a structure for chemical analysis. After a hiatus, in the 1990s was introduced the concept of micro total-analysis systems (μTAS); this has triggered an increasing interest in the development of nano and microsystems that can carry out on a chip format those operations that would normally be performed in the laboratory. In situations where a particular function is performed these devices have been termed, LoC or more broadly as microfluidics.

Objectives / objectifs

The overall science and technology objective is to create LoC that are more integrated and functional and show the applicability of the approaches developed through demonstrator applications. The project will:
• Use EOF and on-chip pressure source with passive valves as convenient and integrated approaches for fluid driving through LoC
• Develop a suitable interface that will allow easier interfacing of the mechanical, electrical and fluidic elements of the LoC to the macro world
• Develop detection elements that are integrated as part of the overall LoC device
• Create more functional LoC devices by using large-scale valve integration to carry out more complex fluidic processing operations and develop schemes that allow parallel detection.
• Show applicability of integrated and functional approaches through demonstrator applications

Impact/ results – Impact/résultats

The InFuLoC project will develop new long term collaboration(s) between industry and academic partners. These collaboration(s) will provide European Universities and companies a leading knowledge position in LoC technology and applications for the creation of new knowledge and to innovate new products. The leading knowledge will be exploited to drive economic growth through e.g. licensing of IP. The various defined workpackages have considerable potential to generate economic value which can be exploited by the consortium as a whole, part of the consortium or independently by a particular partner.

Le rôle de LIP 

LIP accompagne le responsable scientifique pour l’UCBL pour la gestion quotidienne du projet (mise en place des échanges et déplacements des chercheurs, contacts avec le coordinateur du projet et la commission européenne concernant les aspects administratifs du projet).
