Context / Contexte

Mold4ProdE aims to improve efficiency in plastics injection moulding.
Over the last 10 years there has been a significant increase in demand for diversity and personalisation of plastic parts. To meet this demand, companies have had to drastically increase the number of injection moulds they use, with smaller batch production and reduced lifetime of tools. As a result, there is now strong pressure to produce parts with a high level of efficiency, minimum scrap and minimum tool set-up time.
Mold4ProdE aims to help solve this problem by producing a ‘Turn-Key Intelligent Mould’ system. This is a mould with minimum set-up time and very low scrap levels due to a continuous monitoring and feedback loop based on sensors in the moulding machine and a data processing system.

Objectives / objectifs

The main aim of this project is to develop and assess a method which will give tool makers the opportunity to design and deliver more quickly 'turn key intelligent' tools to end users, at a reasonable extra cost, offering these end users significant productivity improvements.
In parallel, the project shall also provide dedicated, qualified and optimised components for tool measuring, data collection and processing.
The project includes the following key stages:
• Provision of an effective 'tool signature' for a Turn Key Intelligent Mould'.
• Establish protocol for sensor implementation.
• Implement sensors and define signature of trial mould.
• Extend simulation software to produce virtual signature for the same mould.
• Combine the results from the practical and simulation data to provide the best 'tool signature' possible.
• Establish demonstrators and indicators for measurability of productivity enhancement.
• Evaluation and optimisation of cost-benefit ratio for tool-makers and for converters and end-users.

Impact / results - Impact / résultats

This project aims at creating the “foundations for knowledge-based engineering capacity” for added-value intelligent mold manufacturing, directly transferable and usable by the European Tool Makers community. The innovating processes resulting from this project, with respect to the implementation of « Turn Key intelligent molds », will contribute to the optimization of the European plastic manufacturing industry, having a direct economic impact on the expected final product: molded plastic parts.
This innovation process related to injection molds for the Plastics Industry will first generate a significant time-to-customer reduction, offering a faster tool delivery to the converter or the end user, by the Tool Maker. It will automatically increase productivity by shortening the duration of the set up process as well as the “scrap” ratio, thereby boosting the productivity and profitability of plastic parts suppliers’ companies (converters or end users).
Additionally to this economic profitability, the results of this project will promote the European tool making industry to transform from resources-based company into knowledge-based engineering service providers. The overall resulting impact will cause the generation of new business relations in the injection molding supply chain. Therefore, new business models will appear from the close operating system between the mold makers and the plastic converter, and why not with the final plastic part user.

 

Rôle de LIP

LIP a accompagné le porteur de projet dans toute la phase de montage : recherche de partenaires, définition des contours du projet, coordination du montage administratif et financier du projet, conseil à la rédaction, proposition d’un modèle de gouvernance, etc. LIP est également partenaire du projet en charge du management administratif, juridique et financier de ce consortium regroupant 25 partenaires dans quatre états-membres, dont 19 PME et grands groupes.
